Pakistan was created in 1947 when the Indian sub-continent was divided between Pakistan and India. Pakistan has been an Islamic republic since 1956. It withdrew from the Commonwealth in 1972. In 1971 its eastern enclave had declared its independence and is since then the People's Republic of Bangladesh.
